From 1979 to 1982, D.O.A. created some of the most visceral and vital examples of punk/hardcore music while also touring the world blazing a path that is still followed today. For that reason, I was immediately taken by the idea of a memoir from Randy Rampage the bass player of D.O.A. during that time period. Over the course of 34 chapters, Randy details his life with great candor before, during, and after his time in D.O.A. At the end of which, the reader is left with the unmistakable impression that Randy spent his life doing what he wanted and how he wanted to do it with little care of concern for anyone else or what they thought.Randall Desmond Archibald aka Randy Rampage was born to a middle class family in Vancouver, British Columbia, 21 February 1960. By his admission, his upbringing was comfortable and without any great trauma or conflict. For the first three chapters, the reader learns that Randy was a middling student with little ambition, how he grew to love music, how his family supported him, how he met D.O.A., and how he became their bass played despite not liking the instrument. Additionally, readers also learn that while in D.OA. Randy appears to contribute little to the band beyond playing shows.By his own admission, Randy helped little with songwriting on those seminal D.O.A. records released during his time in the band. He does not mention a single incident where he made a substantive contribution to the band on any level not involving live performances. In fact, the remaining chapters dedicated to his time in the band become a tiresome routine of drinking, drugging, screwing, fighting, and playing shows. Passages about his interactions with the other members of D.O.A. remain brief, filled with tension, and increasingly rare as the chapters pass. Not even news of Randy fathering a child after a brief tryst while on tour moves him to change his ways. Even a casual reader will gleam that Randy is solely concerned with Randy.Randy’s time after being kicked out of D.O.A. in the early 1980’s is a depressive tale of drug abuse, failed relationships, self-delusion, pipe dreams, and rock/metal bands which made little lasting impact. Brief bright spots like his time in Annihilator are ruined by Randy’s inability to control his drinking, his drugging, and his penchant for punching people in the face. Even Randy’s brief return to D.O.A. produces little to interrupt his substance abuse.Undeniably, Randy was a part of D.O.A. while the reputation that still sustains the band was created. Additionally, Randy was part of the punk/hardcore scene at its earliest moments and thereby participated in laying the foundation for much of what those scenes are today. Beyond a cataloging of the women Randy slept with, the “ass†he kicked, and the years he wasted drinking and drugging, however, I Survived D.O.A. has little to contribute to the history of D.O.A. or the early punk/hardcore scene. The title of the book is deceptive as Randy’s survival was never challenged by D.O.A., though the reverse appears to be true.Given Randy’s selfish behavior throughout his life – lacking from this book is a single example of Randy doing anything for anyone else on any level – the title of the book appears to more about threats to his exaggerated ego than any threats to his survival. From the first chapter to the last, the only unifying thread is Randy’s unabated attempts to gratify his urges without any care for the cost to himself and others. The image of Randy that emerges after reading the book is that of a continually besotted letch who was along for the ride during a transitional period in music and as such has little substantive to say about that time but is saying it anyway.In the end, I Survived D.O.A. remains a shallow, error laden, disappointing stream-of-consciousness-mental-dump by a self-centered addict whose story was helped little by two editors and a ghost writer. Randy reviews his life with no more depth or analysis than that of a day-drinker at your local dive sitting at the bar alternatively regaling fellow drinkers with prideful exploits and tales of woe. If unrepentant selfishness, failure to learn from one’s mistakes, and a general lack of accomplishment are your fancy, then I Survived D.O.A. is the book for you. Fans of D.O.A. or early punk/hardcore hoping to learn about those early days you are better served searching out Joey Keithley’s I, S***head instead of spending money on this book.
When I heard about this book I was immediately hooked. D.O.A. have been one of my favourite bands since I was 15 and I've read just about every piece of literature I've been able to get my hands on about them. As much as I love this band I find their history a little one-sided, in that just about every piece of information comes from their singer/lone original member Joe "S***head" Keithley, so it was interesting to hear some of the well-known stories I know about this band from the point of view that isn't Joe's.While Joe focuses more on the politics and activism of the band's early history, Randy Rampage focuses more on the sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll part of the early years of punk.From there Rampage talks about his time as lead vocalist of the Canadian thrash metal band Annihilator, which he was kicked out of after punching their guitarist and lead songwriter in the face, twice, and his few brief reunions with D.O.A. Over the years.At this point my only problems with the book come from the sort of selective attention to detail given throughout the autobiography. The first half of the book is dedicated to his time in D.O.A., roughly five years, while the second half breezes by the early 80s until the present. While I found his version of the D.O.A. story interesting I would have preferred if he'd given the same attention to his post-Hardcore'81 career. In my opinion it only felt like part of the story, and I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more than I already did if there were another 100-150 pages. Could there possibly be an "I Survived D.O.A. 2" in the works, or a revised version that included some of the stuff that was left out of the first edition?Not exactly the best punk rock autobiography I've read, but as a diehard D.O.A. fan I found it deeply fascinating and entertaining.
Chris Walter's articulate grasp on the juxtaposition of sub cultural genre to writ is an advanced, purposefully visual style that progresses the reader's understanding of the vivid messages Mr. Walter wishes to convey and leads them down a winding path of intrigue and masterful adventure, like Virgil leading Dante down the valleys of the deepest depths . I highly recommend Mr. Walter's work whether it be to a fledgling book reader being bogged down by the pressures of pubescent development to the oldest miser on his deathbed cursing his hospice care taker.
Chris Walter even signs your name in the front beside his name...that alone is worth the purchase and 5 star review.Mr. Walter also once talked me through an e-transfer. He had faith in me because his mom could do it. What a nice guy! Seriously, buy his books!
The music bios are some of my favorite from Walter.I first started readig his books after I found Punk Rules OK in the garbage in the Dunsmir. Since then I've read about half of what he's put out. But this is definitely in the top three of his works.
Chris Walter teams up with Randy Rampage to deliver a rare view of D.O.A. between shows and on the road. Like his other band bio's, this one was packed with hilarity and craziness with a touch of nostalgia for those of us that were around to see these epic Canadian punk bands! Walter's straightforward nonsense biography style impressed me so much after reading the kindle version of his SNFU bio that I ordered the paper version of this one! Solid read for those interested in the untold history of North American Hardcore. Worth the read!
This was a great read - it was interesting to get a look at DOA's output through the prism of Randy Rampage's experience.Canadian hardcore is a unique place, and I'm glad to have gotten this behind-the-scenes perspective.
