About the Author
John Rosamond was, like the British motorcycle industry, born in the West Midlands. After leaving school, he learnt his trade as a skilled welder and shortly thereafter was employed by the world famous Triumph motorcycle factory at Meriden to work producing their new oil-bearing frames. A socialist and union man, John was elected to speak on behalf of his fellow welders. Returning to welding frames after the Meriden sit-in, John became, in 1977, the second and last chairman of the Triumph workers' board of directors in particular, seeing through the continuing development of the world famous Bonneville model until the factory's closure in 1983. After Meriden, John was employed by the new Triumph firm in Hinckley and then returned to his original trade as a welder, assessing students in the craft until his retirement in 2003.John Rosamond was, like the British motorcycle industry, born in the West Midlands. It is puzzling how a company and product so successful only half a decade earlier would nearly vanish in the early 1970s. Triumph at one time was arguably the most popular motorcycle in America. Yet after two debilitating mergers the brand faced extinction only to be rescued by the workers themselves. Author Rosamond provides the unique perspective of someone who worked on the assembly line and later found himself as a leader of the co-op. His insight and copius note-taking present an insider's view of exactly what happened. This book is a highly detailed play-by-play of the formation of the co-op, it's struggles and eventual collapse while on the very cusp of success. It is a story not clearly told in many other books on Triumph and is a necessary read if one wants to understand what really happened to this iconic company.The only downfall of this book is it's reliance on meeting minutes and notes to tell the story. Dry material throughout is intermixed with Rosamond's personal recollections. For anyone other than true business scholars substantial portions of the book are a real slog to get through. The writing of much of it is dry and businesslike. Skipping paragraphs of uninteresting minutiae is how the more casual reader will make his way to the end. This is not to say the book is not worth reading as the story itself is fascinating. Just be aware that the content ebbs and flows in it's level of importance to the reader. I ultimately did enjoy this book but gave it three stars instead of four because it often reads more like a classroom text than a story about a company and it's employees.
John Rosamond has written the definitive history of the Triumph Meriden Co-op, that curious experiment in 1970's British social and industrial Utopia. Workers could, or so the theory went, be masters of their own industrial universe and take over the management of corporations.Save the Triumph Bonneville is the story of this experiment as much as it is the story to keep the iconic motorcycle in production. The book is a fascinating read for anyone who has any sort of affinity for the "Bonnie". But be warned: It's heavy going for anyone with only a passing interest. It is the story of the company producing the Bonneville, not the story of Bonneville itself.The Author has delved into primary sources: Board minutes, memos and correspondence and has often quoted these sources verbatim which paints an accurate picture of the corporation. But unfortunately John does not tell the human story to any depth which is a serious omission. He is also light on detail about the development of the products during their production by the Meriden Cooperative. In the telling it's almost like the company producing the motorcycle and the motorcycle itself are unrelated. The engineering development of the T140V - T140E will not be found in this book."Save the Triumph Bonneville" is a well written account of the rise and fall of the Meriden Co op. Reading between the lines one gets a clear sense of why the Co op failed: Under capitalised from the beginning, insufficient cash flows to allow re-investment into plant and equipment or the product itself and well meaning but, at the end of the day, inexperienced management.I would recommend this book to anyone who owns, rides, loves a Triumph Bonneville or anyone who is interested in 1970's industrial or political history.
The book provides an extremely detailed insiders perspective on the battle for and eventual death of the Triumph Meriden workers' cooperative. John Rosamond has a unique perspective and obvious access to documentary materials that no one else can match. As coop chairman and a motorcycle frame welder in the factory, he was there for all the struggles to keep the factory going and his fellow workers employed. The book is a frank detailed look at Triumph's complicated journey to receivership in 1983. All the while, fighting to keep going and even developing new models along the way.Personally, I learned my Bonnie was constructed during a big production push when coop workers were promised a 25 pound Christmas bonus if they could complete 1200 machines in the 20 days leading up to Christmas. My only criticism of the book is there aren't more of these details of what was actually going on in the factory in the production of Motorcycles while the coop was fighting for its survival. As it is, it provides insights on the Triumph story that should interest any enthusiast of the brand.

Great history book. A very good coverage of a less known time period in Triumph motorcycle history. A must read for the historian.
Using genuine historical documents, this story is about a legendary motorcycle company, the people who manufactured the bikes, the people who ran the company, and how politics and the global market affected the Meriden Triumph plant. Very informative, insightful.
This book, although a little heavy going at times, tells a story that is more than just the (Bonneville) bike but is a snapshot of the manufacturing world in the 70's. Written by someone so intimately involved means it's factual and so meaningful. Anyone with an interest in either the bike or British industry will really enjoy this book.
