After months of waiting, the Kindle edition of this fine Study Bible was delivered today. Unfortunately, it's awful. The verses are not hyper-linked to the notes; so to, say, get to the study not for Matthew 5:17 you have to scroll to the end of Matthew 5 and then through the notes to verse 17. This is really unpleasant. Furthermore, the maps index at the back is not linked to the maps - so you can't click on them and go straight there.These are the kind of things we look for easy convenience in with Kindle; and I am extremely disappointed. I suppose these are the starting problems of a new Kindle ed, but other Study Bibles I have on Kindle work fine (Zondervan NIV SB; Jewsih Study Bible, for e.g.). I love this SB, but wish that the kindle ed was user friendly - a reasonable expectation given the amount of times the release of this edition has been delayed.I would not recommend purchasing the Kindle ed until there is some indication that these problems have been resolved.

If you're in the mainline tradition, and you like the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) translation, this is the Bible for you. Lots of notes and context-setting. Excellent articles in the front. We used this as our textbook Bible in seminary, and of all the Bibles I own, this is the one that I pull out first.

Simply a beautiful Bible. Ecumenical-so Lutheran, Presbyterian, reform and liberal Judaism, Orthodox, Episcopal. Baptist, Roman and Irish Catholic, anyone using a Bible for learning. cannot be better served. The introdu tory essays on israel before Christ. Religion and archeology and ways to read the Bible are new. The huge 16 page color map section, volumrd amounts of pertinent notes on every passage , over. 20 pages of b&w maps and huge tabled and comparison charts make this THE study Bible. Laid out like a Protestant Bible it contains the Apocryphal and Deuterocanonical books used by all Judeo-Christian readers. Wonderful.

I bought this on the recommendation of Peter Enns, my favorite writer in the realm of Bible exegesis / study / nerdery. He says it's one of his favorite study bibles, along with the New Interpreter's. I own that one already, but reading the two side by side, I greatly prefer the notes and essays in this one so far. They are engaging, (mostly) accessible and easy to read, and packed with useful info about context and discoveries from biblical criticism and history. The notes do an amazing job situating the books of the Bible within history - both the time the story is taking place and the time the text was written down - and they offer insight from other Near Eastern cultures that sometimes clarify confusing episodes in the Old Testament.In addition to gushing about how much fun this is to read, I'm mostly writing this review because I noticed the reviews of the Kindle version are fairly negative - others found it difficult to navigate around between the scripture text itself and the notes. Maybe those reviewers have a different study bible workflow than I do, but I'm having no issues at all. The Kindle version is broken up so that you read a short chunk of the Bible, then you get the notes for that chunk, then the next chunk of scripture begins. This is exactly how I read study bibles anyway, even when they're in physical form, so I couldn't have asked for a better layout. Maybe others like to read a sentence or two at a time and jump down to the notes for those couple sentences, in which case there'd be a lot of paging back and forth, but even with paper study bibles that's not how I read, I find that takes me out of the narrative too much. If you read like I do - finishing a whole chapter before you jump to the study notes - this one is great.

I've been studying the Holy Bible since I was very young. (King James) Although I'd studied it before, since I bought this book and have begun reading it, the bible has come alive so much more. The translation is very easy to read and has so so many great footnotes. When getting to the NT books, the pre-book explanation's become really helpful, especially with the Pauline Epistles. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is thinking of taking their bibical study to the next level.

I love the NRSV, and I find the commentary in this study bible excellent and useful. However, the Kindle edition leaves much to be desired where navigation is concerned. While the translation footnotes are linked in the text, the verse-by-verse commentary is not—in order to read commentary, you have to page forward to the end of each chapter, then back to where you left off. It sounds like a minor inconvenience, but in the end it leaves the Kindle edition near-unusable. This is especially frustrating given the numerous delays in the release of this edition.Since I'd also purchased Harper Bibles's NRSV with Apocrypha, I've found that the easiest way to use this study bible's commentary is to actually jump between the text of the other edition and the notes in this one. It saves a lot of extraneous bookmarking, but it's absurd that it's necessary.Adding links from commented-upon verses to the endnotes and back would make this easily a 5-star purchase. If there's an update in the future, I'd be happy to change my rating. In the meantime, though, it's just too difficult to use.Update: I've spent a bit more time with this study bible, and my opinion is softening a bit. I've found that there's still value in reading through the verse-by-verse commentary after I've read each chapter, and when it's genuinely necessary to flip back to a verse the Kindle's page-forward/back function is useful. It's a bit hacky, though, and links within the text would still be preferable. I've bumped the score from 2 to 3 stars.
