Lol Cuz it's just basic CBT on how to be more disciplined.If you've told yourself "I am willing to do whatever it takes to lose weight!" then you're probably ready for this life-changing book. If not, then I wouldn't recommend it. To lose weight the right way means changing old habits that die hard & take patience, work and time. And Dr Beck will help you every step of the way....but you really gotta be fed up & ready, ya know?I've been a size 6 my entire life. Even after four kids, I always lost the extra weight right away. That was, until *POOF * I turned 40 and my body's metabolism just suddenly changed. I guess nature just tries to slow you down and your metabolism comes to a screeching halt? I have no idea why. But it was scary. I've never ever struggled with my weight until then.This book helped me lose 20 lbs last summer. I chose to simply reduce my calories to 1500/day. I used an app on my phone to record everything I ate (which is a one of the pillars for her program). This is extremely annoying & time consuming at first, but you just have to get over it & soon you get used to it and it only takes a few minutes a day. But 10 lbs quickly crept back on because I sort of skipped over the "how to maintain" parts of the book. I felt sure once I was a size 6 again everything would be peachy. But I'm reading it now for the second time and getting much more out of it.One of the biggest breakthroughs for me, was the idea that "being hungry is not an emergency!" I get headaches when I don't eat right away, so this was hard to fathom. But I soon learned that when I'm avoiding sugary snacks & soda, my headaches went away.Some advice: talk to a doctor before choosing a diet. I lost 20 pounds, but then something awful happened: most of my hair fell out. I went to the doctor and she said I was too small to reduce my calories to a 1500 cal diet restriction. And also I forgot to take a multivitamin while losing weight. Hence the wicked hair loss.

I have been meaning to write this review for several years now. This book is the singular reason I was finally able to lose 35lbs and I still use it as a resource to keep me from gaining the weight back. In the beginning, I just wanted to quit but I kept telling myself "what is the alternative? to keep gaining weight every year and be unhappy that I can't fit into my clothes? Just follow the day-by-day tasks and the weight will take care of itself". Those day by day tasks allowed me to 1) focus on the simple steps instead of the weight I wanted to lose 2) not give up when I fell off the wagon 3) learn to strengthen my "resistance muscle" 4) learn how to respond to cravings 5) learn the difference between hunger and the desire to eat 6) helped me with impulse-control (not just with food either) 7) recognize and respond to sabotaging thoughts (again, not just related to food).Take heart - I bought this book about 5 years prior to my success, perused it, liked it but did not wholly commit myself to following the steps. Needless to say I did not succeed that first time. When I was at my most desperate moment I picked up the book again and I committed to follow the first 14 days. This book has got to be the best purchase I have ever made! It's a game changer. Since buying it I have recommended it to numerous people who have also bought it and loved it. It will change the way you diet. For all those who have dieted for years (like me!) and then gained it all back, this book is a must. It is not a diet book. It does not tell you what to eat. However, it will make following whichever diet you are on way easier to follow. This book is a therapy program. It gets you to change the way you think. If I eat something not on my diet, I get right back on track. (Something I couldn't do before this book.) If you have a lot of weight to lose or just a few pounds, buy this book!! You will thank me for it!

So please take this testimonial with a grain (or kilo) of salt: using Beck's behavioral therapy approach, I have lost about 30 pounds in the last five months, fairly painlessly.Beck's approach is to see dieting as a matter of skill, not will; of habits, not fad diets. She is entirely agnostic about the specific diet a reader chooses (other than being a reasonable and healthy choice); instead, the book is about how to make better choices and how to do it as simply and forcefully as possible.For me, at least and thus far, it has worked.

The recommendations are sound, however it just did not work for me. It is definitely worth a shot for others. I do still incorporate some of the suggestions in this book; for example, I do read the reasons I want to lose weight and carry them with me everywhere. If this book doesn't work, consider the book Never Binge Again. It was very effective for me. I wrote a separate review on that one too.

Most diet books do not hold my attention but this book is the solution. This book provides 42 days of instruction. Each day there is an exercise and also a list of sabotaging thoughts. Of course, I was shocked at how often my mind went straight to sabotage. Being hard headed, I read this book through twice and did the exercises. But, finally, I have successfully lost that final 10 pounds and feel in the best shape of my life. I also started jogging and weight lifting. Most of all, I have lost the fear of food and enjoy my life! Thank you Dr. Beck!
