About the Author

KIMBERLY ANN JOHNSON was a yoga teacher and bodyworker whose body, and life, was permanently altered when she sustained an injury during childbirth. Determined not to get a full pelvic floor reconstructive surgery, she traveled the world learning about postpartum practices. After healing herself, she became a doula, Sexological Bodyworker, and Somatic Experiencing practitioner so that she could help women through this important and overlooked phase of development that is the postpartum period. As is taught in many traditional cultures, she believes that when nurtured and taken care of properly, women can emerge from this rite of passage stronger, more whole, and with more access to their power. She believes the same is true of relationship, that with the right tools, marriages and partnerships can be more connected and robust after children. For this reason, she wrote The Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing YourBody, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitality to be published by Shambhala Press in November 2017. I love that I am reading this book as the mother of a 9 and 12 year old and still the material is relatable. I can do the work of the fourth trimester even now with older children. I think that is the way with truth; it withstands the test of time. Kimberly's book is helping me see what steps I can take to view my experience with compassion and continue to heal as I move forward. It's also possible to flip the book open to any part and get a nugget of wisdom or hear another woman's story.

I read this book on my last trimester of our second child and it brought up good conversations with my husband. I love the way it emphasizes that your marriage and relationship with your partner should not be placed in the back burner during this 4th trimester period. I also like the way it is organized, depending on which stage of life you are in. Definitely a good book companion to first forty days.

Every mother/to-be and those that support early maternity should read this book! Even though I am personally pretty well-versed in mother/baby care value systems, as somebody who is in the middle of my first pregnancy (which has been riddled with physical and emotional challenges), this book has been like a good friend telling me how it all really is in a calm clear manner - I have shed tears in pure recognition interspersed with note taking and saying out loud "oh good idea!"This book majorly validates a mother's intuitive knowing (because we really do know these things!) but also helps move that inuition into clear actionable steps to build real, tangible support during this critical time.I am hesitant to give anyone any parenting advice, especially to new and pregnant mothers, but this book I feel is a must!I am so grateful this book was written!

(Writing from my Husbands account) Dont borrow this one, youre gonna want your own copy!!! This book is amazing. So easy to navigate if you're not a "read the whole book" kind of person, but you'll end up reading cover to cover several times. It is so in depth but incredibly easy to read. I love the structure and how Kimberly adds her personal story to relate to the reader. It is a beautiful reminder to rest and not be afraid to ask for help during your recovery. If you are a partner, this book is for you too! Anyone who supports a mother or is a mother should have this in their tool box. I am a first time mom and have heard and read a lot of what she discusses in the book, but now I have one solid source to refer back to, its like the postpartum dictionary must have. I paired it with The first fourty days (Heng Ou) and I need no other books for me. Now to find that for baby! I would recommend even if you're remotely considering motherhood.

I found this book because I have had online courses and hands-on healing sessions with Kimberly Ann Johnson. The wisdom and empowerment she transfers to the people she engages with is unlike anything I have seen.I'm just a few chapters in but already I know this will be a path-altering tool in my own healing process. The rituals and planning and movement guides will give me framing to have my own best Fourth Trimester NOW - even though my child is in 6th Grade.I had an extremely traumatizing pregnancy and birth experience that included surgeries and cancer treatments. It's only recently more than a decade later that I guess my body feels safe enough to explore those traumas.Kimberly's book is an ideal shepherd in this exploration. She has encapsulated her teachings and tools in such a way that you can benefit from her extensive knowledge and authentic compassion even if you don't happen to live near one of her workspaces.I highly recommend The Fourth Trimester for every person preparing to birth - or anyone who is caring for someone that is birthing or parenting. At any stage of preparation or recovery this book has tools and information that are vital and relevant. If you work with birthers, this should be on your library shelf.I will come back to add more to my review once I finish reading it...but don't you wait on me. Get yours now because it is never too EARLY to prepare for a healing Fourth Trimester.

Where do I begin? This book is everything. I have a one year old and didn’t have this book during my 4th trimester. I will definitely implement this information if I have a second baby. But this book is still so helpful to women at all stages of life. It discusses the importance of self-care, prioritizing ourselves, asking for help and support, knowing we can do everything)but we don’t have to and efinitely don’t have to do it alone. I am a sex therapist and I have recommended this book to several clients and couples. This last week I have gifted this book 4 times to personal friends!!!!! You will not regret this purchase.
