Buy this book for the video.I've bought lots of drawing books over the years. I've given most away to people I don't like. I keep books by Lee Hammond and Carrie Stuart Parks because they do the best job of explaining how to draw, and to learn to draw you really need a good book. The big difference between the two is that Hammond uses a grid to help you figure out proportion and Parks uses a measuring aid. Both methods work well and are complementary. But even the best book is insufficient. You need to SEE HOW THEY ACTUALLY DRAW. And for that you need a video. It's like the difference between reading a book on golf and watching a golf video. And this book has a 24 minute video.

An excellent absolute beginner's book. [Just exactly what I was looking for.] Explains how to shade, shape, and properly proportion every facial feature and then how to put them all together in a well done 'portrait' -- using only a photograph. A must have for every beginner intending to draw faces. Be warned, however, that this book teaches to draw 'lifelike' in an ILLUSTRATIVE genre, as opposed to 'REALISTIC' [or 'REALISM']. An example of the difference would be a Norman Rockwell style drawing [illustrative] and any of the old masters [realistic]. This book teaches illustrative, Norman Rockwell style drawing. So this book not the only beginner's book you should have if 'lifelike' and 'realistic' together is what you really want. You should also have 'Drawing on the right side of the Brain -- Betty Edwards and How to Draw What You See -- Rudy de Reyna. Also, I bought this book used hardcover from 'melisasandy' in Amazon Marketplace and although it was advertised as good condition, it came in very excellent condition. If you are going to buy any books used, this is the third book I bought through 'melisasandy' and all arrived in excellent condition. I recommend you buy your used books from them when you can..

This is a tough review for me. I have watched Lee Hammond on Youtube to get of inspiration and a bit of guidance as I try my hand at learning to draw. There are others I use as well. This book seemed like it would be a good addition to my library. Especially with the added DVD of instruction. And that's where it fell apart. The DVD really adds nothing of value to this book. Instead you get the DVD version of something readily available on Youtube in which Lee shows you how to make a value line from darkest to lightest, and then demonstrates how to draw a sphere using her mechanical pens and her tortillions. All needed knowledge, but that's where it stops. There is no real demonstration of how she puts the "Hammond blending technique" (that's how it's billed) to use in an actual creation of a portrait from a photo. Very disappointed. Get the book if you must, but leave the DVD in its holder. You'll gain nothing from viewing it.

I started drawing portraits of my daughter from photos after losing her to cancer last year. Then I was given the name of this book and author and ordered it. It arrived the day before we were flying to Mexico and I read the whole book on the plane. I found a store in Mexico that sold the needed supplies and the first portrait I did was really good. Everyone liked it and thought I had potential. I have since recommended the book to others. With time I have improved in my drawing and I think this is a great book for those who want to draw very nice portraits. And I say if I can do it, anyone can. Go for it!I have read a super-critical, long-winded review of this book that told me that I will never be a great artist using this book. I say so what! I draw beautiful portraits that are pleasing to my subjects and myself. Since I am 71 years old I don't intend to be the "professional" that the long-winded reviewer pretends to be. People are happy with my portraits and so am I. I am very grateful to Lee Hammond for this book.

I have her original "draw lifelike portraits from photographs" and was very disappointed in this one it contains a lot of duplicate info and instructions as the first one. strictly for beginner. The book shows some pictures and instructions, of ethnic and some new drawings I was hoping that the CD would show more detailed instructions in these but it was her basic instructions. I would suggest the first book for beginners although this book would also be good either one. She does very beautiful work and will be very helpful. Had to return book.

Received book in wonderful condition.Love this book. I'm returning to my art after a very long time and need a thorough refresher of my skills. I've read through the book and I immediately related to and appreciated her techniques and insights, as well as how she expressed them.Highly recommend for beginning and returning artists!

Wow! A friend of mine that has become a very accomplished artist, recommended this book to start with. I did my first portrait of a friend and was very pleased with the results. I still have a long way to go but am enjoying the journey.I would recommend this to anyone that has an interest in honing your skills of drawing portraits. Love it!!!

This book is truly wonderful ! I have several art books and this one is by far the best. Lee Hammond does and excellent job of teaching without bogging you down with page after page of yammering. She is to the point and the improvement I've seen in my work as I went through this book is amazing. I personally don't think the reviewer who bashed this book knows what he's talking about. He mentions Betty Edwards book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as an excellent book... I have that book ! I made it 25% of the way through doing the exercises and such and then had to quit because my joy and enthusiasm had been sucked right out of me with all the droning on and on. I want to learn how to draw not get a PhD in Art Psychology. After that experience I left drawing for over a year. When my desire to draw returned I bought this book from Lee Hammond and I've been encouraged ever since. I'm thrilled with the improvement I've made and how much fun Lee makes learning. If that reviewer knows so much I didn't quite catch the names of his books. ?

Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls

Review

“Lisa Damour offers a fresh, riveting take on the unsustainable stress girls face today, which is often fueled unintentionally by the most well-meaning parents and teachers. Damour also offers refreshing and research-based practical fixes; it’s possible to normalize pressure, in many cases, and use it in fortifying ways to build strength and confidence. Under Pressure is an invaluable read for anyone who has girls, works with girls, or cares about girls—for everyone!”—Claire Shipman, New York Times bestselling author of The Confidence Code and The Confidence Code for Girls“Anyone who has read the beloved Untangled knows that Lisa Damour gets girls. This timely sequel brings stunning clarity to the complicated set of stressors that girls experience—in the classroom, online, with peers, and at home—and models how to show up as an ally instead of an adversary. Truly a must-read for parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors wanting to help girls along the path to adulthood.”—Julie Lythcott-Haims, New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult  “Under Pressure is exactly what parents need and, as a mother, it helped me to relax! Damour explains the difference between healthy and unhealthy stress and anxiety. She offers a detailed, comprehensive look at how to help our daughters manage naturally occurring tension, toxic stress, and anxiety. This brilliant book is a must-read.”—Norah O’Donnell, host, CBS This Morning “Lisa Damour is my go-to resource for all things raising girls (and I often apply her wisdom to my boys as well). Under Pressure is Damour at her best, addressing issues that are challenging our girls, from sexuality and academics to the ways girls speak and present themselves. Don’t be misled by the title; even if you believe your daughter isn’t unduly anxious, this is a book that will help you to help her navigate. Under Pressure is my gift of choice for parents of teenage girls, and a gift to parents everywhere.”—KJ Dell’Antonia, former editor, The New York Times’ “Motherlode,” and author of How to Be a Happier Parent “Under Pressure provides striking insight into the inner workings of the anxious mind. Filled with tips for any parent, educator, or person interested in helping our girls live and perform up to their potential, this book is a go-to guide for understanding and dealing with stress and anxiety in girls.”—Sian Beilock, president of Barnard College at Columbia University and author of Choke and How the Body Knows its Mind“In readily accessible and easily assimilated prose, Damour . . . [makes] common-sense suggestions to help parents help their daughters in these highly competitive times. Although few of these issues are new, Damour’s instructive book pulls them into the limelight yet again, where they can be addressed by a new generation of parents and girls. Practical solutions backed by solid research that will help many girls overcome their high levels of stress and anxiety.”—Kirkus Reviews“Clinical psychologist Damour thoughtfully and compassionately discusses the many pitfalls faced by adolescent girls today. . . . This is a remarkably thorough and accessible guide for raising girls into strong, independent women.”—Publishers Weekly “Parents of adolescent girls will find this an excellent choice for assisting their children in navigating day-to-day stress and struggles.”—Library Journal “Damour offers practical suggestions for heading off stressful encounters and counteracting their influences. Although aimed at parents, Damour’s sensible and empathetic approach will also be reassuring for teens seeking guidance.”—Booklist

I think that Dr. Damour's first book "Untangled" is absolutely fantastic, and I have pulled it off my self several times a year since buying it. The chapter on romance and dating has been particularly helpful to me. I preordered "Under Pressure" and am so happy that I got it on the same day it was released. Thanks Amazon! Both of my daughers (19 and 16) have anxiety and both have had episodes of panic - many, many episodes in the case of the older daughter. For anxiety as severe as hers, this book was not especially useful, which is one reason for my 4 start review. That said, for every day - and occasional extreme - stress this book has great guidance. Dr. Damour divded the book into 1) Coming to Terms with Stress and Anxiety, 2) Girls at Home (that is stressors that are created or acted out in the family) 3) Girls Among Girls 4) Girls Among Boys 5) Girls at School and 6) Girls in the Culture. Each chapter was full of great ideas, and I highlighted a lot. I am in school studying for high school teaching certificate, and I found the chapter "Girls at School" to be helpful in thnking about my own girls and also thinking about how to make my future classroom less needlessly stressful.I also appreciate that Dr. Damour talks about advice she has given that she now thinks was dumb of her. As a mother parenting in the moment, I appreciate being reassured that even experts make lousy choices sometimes. So to the other reason I only gave the book 4 stars: I feel like it was stretched / padded in places. Dr. Damour likes to use true-to-life examples in her book, but in this text, much more than in "Untangled", some of those true life details are very, very extraneous. I can't find it now, but there were two paragraphs in which she set the stage for meeting up with a friend to discuss the friend's daughter. The setting the stage part described waiting in line at the cafeteria, getting their food, finding a table and then catching up *before* she actually gets to the point: the friend's concern about her daughter. Examples like this make me think that the editor should have been more free with the red pen. And, just so you're aware, although the book is 261 pages long, the actual book only goes to page 220. The remainder are the notes, recommended readings for adults and girls, and the index. My final take away: Absolutely buy this book, but for me it's not a 5 star book like "Untangled."

This was a quick and engaging read, which I needed, and gave me some practical information to share with my daughter about reframing her school-based anxiety. I’m recommending it to every friend I have with a teenaged daughter.

If you have a teen (or child who will someday be a teen) in your life. You need to read this book AND Untangled. I am so better prepared to enter the teen years with my currently 11 y/o daughter based on the information and facts and metaphors and scripts provided by Lisa DAmour in these books. Do yourself a favor and READ them ASAP! (then re-read them).

Devoured this book! Dog-eared pages - notes in the margins - read parts out loud to my husband. Perhaps what I appreciate most is the clear call to empower our daughters by making stress and anxiety part of the growth process. Thanks for challenging parents and daughters alike. Just excellent!

I found Dr. Lisa Damour's book Under Pressure to be fascinating, and helpful to me as the parent of a 12 year old daughter. The author discusses how stress and anxiety can serve as beneficial warning systems, and also dives deep on various areas that may cause stress for teen girls: friends, home, boys, school, and our culture generally. If you're looking to better understand the issues & challenges facing middle school & high school girls today, I encourage you to get this book.

This book focuses on how to deal with the stress and anxiety that plague our daughters today. Dr. Damour brings her signature writing style using a warm friendly tone, anecdotes, humor, relatable examples, and suggestions on how parents can respond to teen daughters in ways that are respectful and kind. This book has many useful, practical, real life insights and discussion points. This is the second best parenting book about teen girls that I've read (Dr. Damour’s first book, Untangled, is my #1). I love the friendly and reassuring tone, the respect that she has for teen girls, and how she supports both parents and daughters. Though it can be read as standalone book, Under Pressure is a wonderful compliment to Untangled. I recommend that parents of teen daughters reference both books together and often.

This book is more of an autobiography than a resource guide. Her own story is very inspiring on how she overcame bad odds and was driven to succeed, however the book only provides a couple, if any, basic tips for scholarships. Most of the information is already known and can be found on the internet. I would not have bought this book had I known she won two junior Olympic gold medals, crowned Miss Jr Teen, and Miss Indiana Teen USA. I feel those grand titles had a lot to do with winning most of those scholarships. Basically, she states students need to get involved with the community by volunteering, been an outstanding member of the community, have good grades, join clubs, have good resume, good relationship with your teachers , get recommendation letters, and a great essay. I just saved you $12.

I read this book a second time and this is what I conclude:This book was not truly written for parents, it was written by a 24 yr old college graduate woman who beat the odds while attending high school, and made it through an awesome college! The reality is that to get into college you need great grades, not just good, and a more meaningful life (except if you are recruited by a technology company or you have super wealthy parents with college connections). She shares that top colleges/universities want a package deal. They want to recruit someone who is academically inclined (AP courses, Honor Roll), has over come some setback (family, emotional, academic via financial/emotional, environmental and i.e... abuse, alcohol, divorce, etc), and that is willing to go the extra mile (had a meaningful job, volunteered after school, baby sat siblings, did chores, help with household upkeep, comforted a parent because they were depressed, and any experience that a kid today is going through...they have a long list on us...) to learn and acquire knowledge. She correctly states that colleges want meaningful applicants and not those that tout old ideas. The thing about this book is that it was truly written for a 14-15 yr old and not for parents that are currently searching for grants. It is a meaningless task if your child does not have the required portfolio and this book may have arrived a little late... If I had read this book at 15, I would have probably been influenced to excel to the next level. I would have known that I needed to do much more than just get great grades, and would have participated more meaningfully in the community. The problem is the many poor urban and rural high school kids will never get to read this book...

I have two daughters, ages 14 (almost) and 16. Wow, am I glad this book came into our lives--with not a second to spare! It will save us thousands and thousands of education dollars, all for the cost of a Starbucks coffee and a breakfast sandwich. What I like about CONFESSIONS OF A SCHOLARSHIP WINNER is that the author LIVED IT. Her story is amazing. This makes this book very personal, very real. If you're looking for a book containing a list of thousands of scholarships--this is not it! Besides, you can find that kind of information on the Internet (the author shows you how). As a result, it is as much a inspirational/motivational book as it is a "how to" book. The author basically becomes your very own college scholarships mentor or coach. Very unique approach--and a good one.The author shows you everything you need to know to go after scholarships of all sizes. How to write essays, what to concentrate on, how to make every word count (sort of like Twitter!). It's amazing how every word does, in fact, COUNT! In addition, she shows you how to create your own personal formula for success. I really loved the section where she goes inside the mind of a scholarship judge...and reveals how they think, and what they are looking for. There is even a chapter on the often-overlooked things that make or break a scholarship application. Are you kidding me? I would have never of thought about those things in a million years!Again, this is not your ordinary scholarship book. The author wrote this to be your guide. She holds your hand and mentors you through the process. She seriously could be the next big motivational speaker for a new generation. She shows you how to "find your voice," how to be a "winner," how to succeed in the scholarship interview, and how to take what you have--even with average grades--and go for the gold without going broke! Even she had average grades, had little money, and ended up going to Vanderbilt--a top 20 college. This is the perfect book for these imperfect times. Times are really tough, so this book is more than a blessing--it's a Godsend.I wish every middle schooler and high schooler in America could have the benefit of this book. I also hope that it ends up in the hands of every high school guidance counselor.Again, my kids are in the 8th and 10th grades. I am SO blessed to have this book in my hands at this point in my life. Times have been tough. I have been trying to figure out how to come up with the money for their college educations. This book is full of answers. Highly recommend. I not only bought the eBook for myself, I'm buying two more copies for each of my kids.
